The time to act for our coastal communities and spectacular natural heritage is now. Our coastal communities are on the frontline of climate change and hold an emotional connection with many of us, yet they are some of the most deprived and forgotten in our country.
We are asking you to pledge one thing that you will do to support our coasts.

Help us to drive the movement to Pledge for the Coast by sharing your individual Pledge to your social media & encouraging others to join!

Whether your a community member, business, Councillor or Parliamentarian, there is a Pledge that you can make to support this unique and wonderful places and their communities.
A number of ideas are provided below but feel free to make your own pledge:

Volunteering/ citizen science
Support your coastline by volunteering to help at beach cleans, learn more about the species and habitats on your coast with Shoresearch or help in the local community, perhaps becoming a lifeguard.
Motion for the Ocean
Whether your a member of the public, council worker or Councillor, you can encourage your local Council to pledge for Ocean Recovery through passing a Motion for the Ocean. See here for more details.

Support campaigns to make our coastlines safer
Throughout the year, there are many campaigns to support safety such as National Drowning Prevention Day, Coast Clever, Float to Live or simply making sure you know how to keep yourself and others safe.
Make the visitor pledge
“When I visit the coast, I promise to support local communities and to protect and respect the natural environment so its beauty can be enjoyed now and for generations to come.”

Lifestyle changes
Perhaps consider how little changes to your lifestyle, such as going plastic free, could make a difference to our environment and communities.
Businesses can sign up to become Plastic Free Champions, click here to find out more.
Develop & support resilience plans
The coast is on the frontline for climate change and we are seeing unprecedented changes which we all need to prepare for including increased erosion and flooding.
Businesses, communities and councils all need resilience plans to ensure that they are prepared for the future.

Minister for the Coast
Join our call alongside the All Party Parliamentary Group for Coastal Communities for a dedicated Minister for the Coast who can bring together governmental departments and raise the profile of the needs of our unique communities.

Year of the Coast 2023
Year of the Coast 2023 is for everyone living, working and involved with the coast –including visitor-facing coastal businesses and destinations. If we all work together to promote the 2023 as the Year of the Coast, we can maximise visibility to raise awareness of our coastline and inspire new audiences to love, visit and protect our coastline.
Through this initiative we want to promote the coast as a sustainable year-round destination, to raise awareness of issues impacting coastal communities and businesses, and to showcase new developments and products.
For further information on the Year of the Coast 2023 please see its dedicated website:
